Carlos honors 4 SAF commandos wounded in Samar encounter

PHILIPPINE National Police (PNP) chief, General Dionardo B. Carlos on Sunday honored four commandos from the PNP Special Action Force (PNP SAF) who were wounded while fighting a group of heavily-armed New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in Gamay, Northern Samar.

Straight from a Bicol visit, the top cop flew to the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center in Tacloban City to present the Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting (PNP Wounded Personnel Medal) to the wounded troopers in recognition of their bravery and sacrifice.

“I have directed the Police Regional Office 8 director, PBGen. Rommel Cabagnot to provide all the assistance needed by our wounded personnel,” Gen. Carlos said.

The PNP chief also gave P100,000 each to the four wounded SAF troopers.

He also visited the wake of the two SAF personnel killed in action in Gamay around 7 a.m. Saturday and ordered their superior to return the fallen troopers to Manila where their bereaved families are waiting.

Carlos, in behalf of the 222,000-strong police force extended his deepest sympathies to the mourning families of Patrolman Franklin Marquez and Pat. Jimmy Caraggayan who were hit by a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by the guerrillas.

“We express our condolences to the families of Pat. Franklin Marquez at Pat. Jimmy Caraggayan. Our snappy salute to the bravery they have shown. They were killed in the line of duty defending our country against insurgency. We would want to recognize the valor of four other troop members who were injured during the firefight,” he said.
