A TOTAL of 19 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) were released from the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City last May 22.

The freed PDLs had served their maximum jail terms at NBP’s minimum-security compound, the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said.

For May alone, BuCor said a total of 142 qualified PDLs had been released from NBP, while 123 other PDLs had been freed from other prison facilities nationwide.

Apart from NBP, the prison facilities under BuCor are Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm in Oriental Mindoro, Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm in Palawan, and Correctional Institution for Women in Mandaluyong City.

Also under the BuCor are the Davao Prison and Penal Farm in Davao del Norte, San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm in Zamboanga City, and the Leyte Regional Prison in Southern Leyte.

BuCor is an attached agency of the Department of Justice (DOJ). Under the law, the DOJ has administrative supervision over BuCor. By Hector Lawas
