PRESIDENT Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. delivers today Monday his first State-of-the-Nation Address (SONA) before the joint session of Congress at the Batasang Pambansa complex in Quezon City.

Marcos delivers his maiden SONA almost a month after he assumed the country’s top political post on June 30, winning the May 19 presidential polls with a wide margin over his closest rival.

Vanue is the newly-renovated and fully-airconditioned plenary hall of the Batasang Pambansa complex, which is the home of the House of Representatives.

Held yearly every fourth Monday of July, SONA is a constitutional obligation, wherein the President unveils the government’s agenda for the coming year.

It is not a piece of paper to be read and forgotten. “Kailangang gawin at tuparin ng gobyerno ang mga nakalagay sa SONA,” according to a well-meaning barangay official.

Reports said that a total of 1,365 foreign and local guests, including members of the influential diplomatic corps, and other dignitaries are expected to attend the historic occasion.

The 64-year-old highly-articulate Chief Executive from Ilocos Norte and Leyte is expected to present his programs action aimed at addressing the country’s various problems and challenges.

Likewise, President Marcos is seen to ask the 24-member Senate and the House of Representatives to fast-track the passage of the Marcos administration’s proposed legislative measures.

We will be drawing the ire of the Filipino people, particularly the poorest of the poor and the other unfortunate members of society, if we fail to meet the expectations of the public.

Sa dami ng ating mga problema, na kagaya ng kahirapan, korapsyon, mataas na presyo ng mga bilihin, at kawalan ng trabaho, ang kailangan natin ay solusyon sa mga ito.
