AWOL cop ambushed in Caloocan

AN AWOL (absent without leave) police officer was killed after being ambushed by armed men on board two vehicles Friday before dawn in Caloocan City.

Caloocan police chief P/Col. Samuel Mina said P/Cpl. Ronel Acuna, 39, resident of 104 Capaz St. Bry. 63 and formerly assigned at the Caloocan police but was transferred to Police Regional Office 8 where he went AWOL, died on the spot from bullet wounds in the head and body while his companion identified as Regine Lintag, 27, of 102 Baltazar St. 5th Avenue, Bgy. 49 was left unharmed.

In his report to Mina, case investigator P/SSgt Arjay Terrado said the incident happened at around 1 a.m. at the corner of Barnadette and Nadurata Streets, between 8th and 9th Avenue, West Grace Park, Bgy. 60.

The victim, after engaging in a drinking spree, was on his way home on board a motorcycle driven by Lintag when a white Toyota Fortuner and silver Toyota Innova blocked their path at the corner of Nadurata and Bernadette Streets.

Several men armed with short and long firearms alighted from the vehicles and repeatedly shot the victim in the head and body then fled towards an unknown direction after the killing.

Bgy. 60 Chairperson Elsa Tonizol in an interview said that to their knowledge, Acuna was already separated from his wife and Lintag was his current girlfriend. She added that the installed close circuit television camera where the killing took place was currently not working.

Responding elements of the scene of the crime operatives recovered two pieces of empty shells for M-16 rifle, three pieces of caliber .45 pistol and a deformed bullet from the crime scene.

Follow-up investigation is being conducted to determine the motive behind the killing.
