A welcome call

THE scenario has now an interesting twist, with outgoing President Rodrigo R. Duterte himself calling on the Filipino people to support the country’s newly-elected leaders.

Note that the tough-talking Chief Executive from Mindanao did not support the presidential bid of the only son and namesake of the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos.

In issuing the call, Mr. Duterte said incoming President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R.Marcos Jr. would need everybody’s help and cooperation and “we must give it to him.”

He said “that’s democracy” in action, adding the people ought to give “our goodness and best wishes” to the new leaders so that they could take the country to a better future.

In his televised weekly “Talk to the People” public address last Monday, President Duterte added: “We have no room for politicking or actions that are divisive to the country.”

However, we share the view of the retiring Chief Executive from Davao City that there’s certainly a need to continue the total war against the drug menace and criminality.

And what’s important is for the Philippine National Police (PNP) and other concerned government authorities to pursue the said war with zeal and determination.

It will be recalled that when he assumed the top political post of the land on June 30, 2016, President Duterte vowed to wipe out the illegal drugs menace in three to six months.

The former state prosecutor and long-time mayor of Davao City found out that “killing the drug monster” was better said than done in this impoverished Southeast Asian nation.

Talagang malala na pala ang problema ng iligal na droga sa Pilipinas.
