A reassurance

IT’S certainly reassuring to know that President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos Jr. is committed to “support and protect” the rights of journalists as they efficiently perform their duty.

In fact, Mr. Marcos said his government, which ends at 12 noon on June 30, 2028, will always be ready to listen to journalists’ concerns and to answer all that they may want to know.

He made the statement during last Wednesday night’s “President’s Night,” which was organized by the highly-influential Manila Overseas Press Club (MOPC) at the Sofitel Plaza in Pasay City.

Founded in 1945 by foreign correspondents who were with American General Douglas “I shall return” MacArthur, MOPC is the oldest press club in the whole of Asia

In addition, Marcos, the only son of the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos, vowed to continue articulating his administration’s plans to the members of the “Fourth Estate.”

Not only that. Likewise, the soft-spoken but hard-working Marcos pledged to be media’s partner in efforts to lead the Philippines to realize its shared aspirations.

In the view of many, including avid supporters and even well-meaning and constructive critics across this impoverished Southeast Asian country, all these moves are “correct.”

The press, he said, plays a crucial role in building an active citizenry that contributes to society’s development.

“The nation counts on media in improving access to information and increasing awareness on issues that affect our country and the world,” according to President Marcos.

Like other Filipinos, we, thus, urge other sectors of Philippine society to rally behind the Ilocano Chief Executive as he orchestrates the day-to-day activities of the government.

We hope the people will wake up to their responsibility to help the government in addressing all our problems.
