FORT MAGSAYSAY, Nueva Ecija – An alleged New People’s Army (NPA) rebel rescued by government forces during a recent skirmish in Ifugao last May 30 was turned over to his parents here.

7th Infantry “Kaugnay” Division Commander Major General Andrew D. Costelo said the rebel, identified as “Ka Bagins” was finally reunited with his mother in simple ceremonies held in front of the main headquarters building on Wednesday.

His mother traveled all the way to Kiangan, Ifugao, to look for her son on Tuesday and proceeded here upon learning of his transfer to this military camp for security reasons.

“The Army hopes all the best for him,” Costelo told Ka Bagins’ parents during the turnover.

Costelo said local Army troopers rescued him from a series of armed skirmishes with the NPA in Ifugao last May 30.

He voluntarily surrendered to the military after escaping from an actual encounter between the Army and his NPA comrades in Bgy. Namal, Asipulo, Ifugao.

“In the spirit of ending the local communist armed conflict, we hope that this peace gesture will inform the small remaining members of the NPA here in Luzon that the Army is willing to facilitate their return back to their normal lives,” said Costelo.
