4 students die after vehicle rams truck in Quezon

FOUR students on Wednesday died when the vehicle they were riding rammed a cargo truck on Maharlika Highway in Tayabas City, Quezon.

The fatalities were identified as Mikaela Solomon, 23; Juan Carlos Alvarez, 22; Enrique Garcia, 20; and Elayne Ramirez, all residents of Candelaria, Quezon.

An investigation by MSgt. Jomer Quinio showed the truck loaded with wood was running slowly while traversing the ascending section of the highway in Bgy. Calumpang in Tayabas City when struck from behind by the vicims’ car, a Toyota Innova, at 3 a.m. on Wednesday.

Both vehicles were on their way to Sariaya, Quezon when the accident happened.

The driver of the truck was identified as Cipriano Gonzalez Jr., 39, of Lopez, Quezon while the Toyota Innova was driven by Garcia.

Responding personnel from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office of Sariaya, City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office of Tayabas, Bureau of Fire Protection-Tayabas, and the Tayabas City police extracted the victims from the ill-fated sports utility vehicle.

The victims were rushed to Quezon Medical Center, where they were declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.

Gonzales is under police custody while investigation is ongoing.
