Let’s fight oppression

PRESIDENT Marcos has challenged the Filipino people, partiularly the youngsters, to rise against what he called our “modern-day oppressors.”

President Marcos aired the “challenge” in a well-applauded speech during last Saturday’s commemoration of the “Battle of Mactan” in Lapu-Lapu City.

It was on April 27, 1521 when local chieftain Datu Lapu-Lapu killed Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in the so-called “Battle of Mactan.”

President Marcos said Filipinos ought to continue embracing the ideals of Datu Lapu-Lapu as the country shifts to a “Bagong Pilipinas.”

The moment Lapu-Lapu and his warriors defeated the Spaniards in the “Battle of Mactan,” they showed the world that “Filipinos are brave and patriotic people.”

The challenge for all of us, especially the youth, is to continue embracing Lapu-Lapu’s bravery, valor and ideals, according to the Chief Executive.

Filipinos, like Datu Lapu-Lapu, have a special place in the hearts of all freedom-loving people in a society of civilized men and women.

And we share the view of the Ilocano President that there is that urgent need to fight our modern-day oppressors – greed, selfishness and oppression.

Let us then uphold the legacy of patriotism that has been passed onto us through the years.
