UST College of Science, NRCP launch IYBSSD 2022 in October
THE UST College of Science, in partnership with the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP), will be launching the International Year of Basic Science for Sustainable Development (IYBSSD) 2022 on 7 October 2022 from 8 AM-12 NN. This event aims to emphasize the role of basic science in the advancement of technologies that respond to the needs of humankind and attain the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The hybrid event, which will take place at the UST Blessed Buenaventura Garcia Paredes, O.P. Building, will feature a virtual keynote speech from Michel Spiro, Ph.D., President of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics. A roundtable discussion with National Scientist Lourdes J. Cruz , Ph.D. along with other notable figures in research and science such as Ephrim Metillo, Ph.D., Jaime C. Montoya, M.D., Marc Eric S. Reyes, Ph.D., and Rosalie Alcala-Hall, Ph.D. will also take place.
The university has signed an agreement of support to be part of the IYBSSD 2022 International Advisory Committee, composed of various national science academies and global scientific networks. The purpose of which is to strengthen the role of basic sciences, all over the world, toward the achievement of Agenda 2030 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. UST will co-advise the development of the international program that will set the activities of IYBSSD 2022 at its regional and national levels.
On 2 December 2021, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the resolution proclaiming this year (2022) as the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development (IYBSSD). Organized by UNESCO, the year long run of IYBSSD is supported by major scientific organizations all over the world—including the UST College of Science and NRCP. The Opening Ceremony of IYBSSD 2022 was held in Paris, France last 9 July 2022.
