THE successive high satisfaction and approval ratings of both the House of Representatives and Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez (SFMR) in recent surveys of major polling firms can be attributed to the House leader’s “hands-on” management of the daily affairs of the chamber.

“Napakasipag ni Speaker Martin. No one among the members of (the) House can deny his energetic way of conducting business in the chamber, especially when it comes to passing important pieces of legislation. And I firmly believe that the Filipino people see that in Speaker Martin,” said Representative Sonny Lagon of Ako Bisaya Party-list, vice chair of the House committees on ways and means and on games and amusement.

“And we, as members, emulate the diligence we see in our leaders. This is truly genuine leadership by example. What we have is an ‘involved leadership’ that allows House leaders and members a free rein on their respective duties and responsibilities without the need for micromanagement,” he added.

In the recent Pulse Asia survey conducted from March 15 to 19, Romualdez obtained a high approval rating of 51 percent, tying with Senate President Migz Zubiri. In that same survey, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte also received high approval ratings, at 78 percent and 83 percent, respectively.

Also, in the recent Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey in December, the House of Representatives under the leadership of Romualdez also garnered a high satisfaction rating of +56, ranked as “Very Good.”

The House of Representatives, so far, has passed a record number of bills and resolutions since the 19th Congress convened ten months ago, passing on final reading many of President Marcos’ urgent bills and priority legislation.

“The survey results are a recognition of our hard work in the lower house, but they are really not our main motivation. As Speaker Martin always says, this is our mandate and contribution to nation-building, to enact laws that will benefit the nation and the Filipino people,” Lagon said.

Lagon said he, Romualdez, and all the elected leaders in the House share their “vision” on what needs to be done in terms of legislation.
