KINUMPIRMA ng Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) na malala ang pinsala sa marine environment at coral reef sa seabed ng Rozul reef at Escota shoal sa West Philippine Sea (WPS).

Ayon kay PCG spokesperson for WPS Commodore Jay Tarriela, ito ang natuklasan ng BRP Sindangan at BRP Cabra sa lugar matapos mapabalita na 33 maritime militia vessels at 15 Chinese maritime militia vessels ang namataan sa lugar noong August 9 at September 11.

“The surveys conducted in Escoda Shoal revealed visible discoloration of its seabed, strongly indicating that deliberate activities may have been undertaken to modify the natural topography of its underwater terrain,” pahayag ni Tarriela.

Posible aniya na inani ang mga corals at ibinalik sa seabed batay sa kanilang nakita sa lugar.

“The presence of crushed corals strongly suggests a potential act of dumping, possibly involving the same dead corals that were previously processed and cleaned before being returned to the seabed,” paliwanag ni Tarriela.

Sinabi ni Tarriela na lumalabas na wala nang buhay ang marine ecosystem sa dalawang lugar.

Iginiit ng opisyal na ang patuloy na pagkukumpol-kumpol ng CMM vessels sa lugar dahil sa illegal na pangingisda ang posibleng dahilan ng degradation at destruction ng marine environment sa dalawang bahagi ng WPS.

“The PCG emphasizes the importance of protecting and preserving our marine environment, which plays a crucial role in sustaining marine life and supporting local communities,” pahayag ni Tarriela.

Matatandaan na noong Sabado, inihayag ng Armed Forces of the Philippines’ Western Command (AFP-Wescom) na may kaso ng massive coral harvesting sa Rozul Reef na nasa loob ng Philippine exclusive economic zone.

Kaugnay nito, tiniyak ni Tarriela na makikipag-ugnayan sila sa Philippine Navy para dagdagan ang mga barko ng Pilipinas na magbabantay sa lugar.

Nakikipag-ugnayan na rin ang PCG sa Department of Foreign Affairs para sa posibleng pagsasampa ng diplomatic at legal actions laban sa China.
