UNIVERSITY of Perpetual Help System Dalta held its ground against fellow NCAA team Letran to eke out a 25-9, 25-17, 25-17 win and stay in contention for a playoff spot in the 2023 Shakey’s Super League (SSL) Collegiate Pre-Season Championship Season 2 at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

Shaila Omipon produced 11 points for the Lady Altas, who showed no signs of a letdown despite a 12-25, 25-21, 15-25, 21-25 setback to Group C topnotcher University of Santo Tomas in the opener.

The win by the Lady Altas also lined themselves for a make-or-break match against NCAA champion College of St. Benilde for the second quarterfinals berth from Pool C.

UST defeated St. Benilde, 25-13, 22-25, 25-12, 25-22, earlier Monday to complete a Pool C sweep.

“Big win ito sa amin before our crucial game against CSB. Sabi ko nga sa mga players, yung mga mistakes nung last game, in-adjust namin sa training para maganda yung labas ng resulta which is naging okay naman this game,” said coach Sandy Rieta as Perpetual needed only 72 minutes to dispatch Letran.

The Lady Knights, under new coach Oliver Almadro, finished its campaign at 0-3.

In the fourth game, Mapua outlasted Emilio Aguinaldo College in straight sets, 25-19, 29-27, 25-11, to wrap up its campaign with a 1-2 record.

Hannah De Guzman led the way with 12 points for the Lady Cardinals, who still sport a slim chance depending on the remaining games of the Lady Generals (0-2) and Ateneo (1-0) for a possible three-way tie at 1-2.

Pool D leader Far Eastern U (2-0) already clinched a playoff spot with a game left against Ateneo.

EAC and Ateneo also slug it out in the remaining match this weekend.

“Natutuwa ako kasi last game namin and we finished strong dito sa Shakey’s. ‘Yung pagkakataon sana na mag no. 2 in a loss against Ateneo, at least dito naipakita nila. Nag-perform sila kung anong meron sila,” said Mapua coach Clarence Esteban.

The Lady Cardinals dropped a 23-25, 20-25, 33-35 decision to the Blue Eagles.

The tournament is being held in cooperation with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

Event sponsors are Mikasa, Eurotel, Victory Liner, Summit Bottle Water, Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken, R and B Milk Tea, Potato Corner, Rebel Sports, Converge ICT Solutions and Genius Sports.
