PCAP: Camarines, San Juan chessers tighten grip on lead

CAMARINES Soaring Eagles and San Juan Predators completed another dominant performance in the GM Wesley So Cup — the Second Conference of the 2021 Professional Chess Association of the Philippines — over the weekend.

Camarines routed Rizal Towers, 19-2, and Quezon City Simba’s Tribe, 18-3, while San Juan crushed Cebu City Machers, 19-2, and Cordova Dagami Warriors, 12-9, to keep the top spot in their respective divisions.

GM Mark Paragua, Ellan Asuela, WGM Marie Sebag, Raul Fernandez and NM Ronald Llavanes led the Soaring Eagles of Engr. Jojo Buenaventura.

Paragua, one of the country’s winningest players, humbled Noel dela Cruz to lead Camarines over Rizal.

Asuela upset NM Robert Arellano, Sebag overwhelmed Kris Angeliue Melicano, Fernandez surprised NM Elias Lao and Llavanes bested Marlon Contantino in both blitz and rapid matches.

GM Victor Moskalenko overpowered Mario Mangubat on board four, while GM Oliver Barbosa crushed Allan Pason on board seven in two games to lead the Hubert Estrella-mentored Predators to victory over the hard-fighting Dagami Warriors.

FM Narquinden Reyes edged Merben Roque, 2-1, on board two, while WIM Jan Jodilyn Fronda bested WIM Bernadette Galas, 2-1, on female board for San Juan’s other victories.

GM Nitzan Steinberg and Brylle Arellano carried the fight for Cordova by beating IM Ricardo de Guzman and NM Michael Gotel, respectively.

Earlier, San Juan routed Cebu City Machers, 19-2 and Cordova nipped Antipolo Cobras, 12.5-8.5.

Barbosa, Reyes, Fronda, Moskalenko and Narquingel Reyes led the Predators’attack.

Manila swept Palawan Queen’s Gambit, 12-9,and Surigao Gianchetto Checkmates, 17-4, to join San Juan in the lead at 13-2.

The Indios Bravos, however, trail the Predators in total points.

Caloocan Load Manna Knights, bannered by IMs Paulo Bersamina and Jan Emmanuel Garcia, edged Iloilo Kisela Knights, 11-10, and Iriga City Oragons, 18.5-2.5, to move up to a share of third place with PCAP All-Filipino champion Laguna Heroes.

The Dr. Fred Paez-managed Heroes had a split, losing to Negros Kingsmen ,8-5-12.5, and winning over Palawan, 13-8.

Iloilo downed Antipolo,12.5-8.5, while Toledo crushed Olongapo, 15.5-5.5, to stay within striking distance at 11-5.

Negros followed up its upset win over Laguna with a 15.5-5.5 triumph over Isabela Knight Raiders for 9-6 record.

PCAP is headed by President-Commissioner Atty. Paul Elaura, Chairman Michael Angelo Chua and Vice Chairman Ariel Potot.

The tournament is sanctioned by the Games and Amusements Board (GAB), headed by Chairman Abraham “Baham” Mitra.
