Pinoy karate bets falling one after another

UNITED STATES-based karateka Joane Orbon, one of the Philippines’ best bets to make it to the Tokyo Olympics, was eliminated in the Karate World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Paris on Saturday.

Competing in the women’s -61 kg. kumite, Orbon failed to sustain her 6-3 win against Cyprus’ Anthea Stylianou in the opening round with a 2-4 loss to Hungary’s Aleksandra Ilankovic in the Round-of-32.

Just like 2019 Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Junna Tsukii, who suffered a shock early exit in last Friday’s opener, the 26-year old Orbon will just hope to make it to the Tokyo Games via the continental quota.

Ivan Agustin and John Enrico Vasquez also ended their chase for an outright Olympic berth.

Agustin crashed out early in the men’s -75 kg. kumite event after a narrow 0-1 loss to Colombia’s Juan Landazuri.

In the men’s kata event, Vasquez could only land in sixth place in the third and final round with 24.96 points.

Their losses leave 2019 SEA Games gold medalist Jamie Lim (women’s +61 kg.) and Sharief Afif (men’s +75 kg.) as the remaining Filipinos in contention for an outright slot in the karate competitions which will be played in the Olympics for the first time.

Aside from Tsukii, Jason Macaalay and Sarah Pangilinan also lost their bid for an outright qualification in the Tokyo Games.
