Camp BGen Oscar M. Florendo, La Union – A top leader of the CPP/NPA operating in Ilocos and Cordillera regions surrendered with his gun and grenades Friday to the Ilocos police.

According to Police Regional Office-1 director Brigadier Gen. Emmanuel Peralta, the men behind the surrender were from intelligence operatives of the 102nd Maneuver Company (MC) of Regional Mobile Force Battalion (RMFB) 1, under the supervision of Police Colonel Roel Sermese, Force Commander.

They facilitated the surrender of an active member of the communist terrorist group along with other police and AFP units at 9 a.m. July 9 at the 102nd MC Headquarters, Bgy. Rosario, Cervantes, Ilocos Sur.

Peralta identified the surrenderer as aka “Ka Mike/steward,” 36, married, a resident of Sitio Cabaroan, Bgy. Concepcion, Cervantes, non-periodic status report listed and a former squad leader of Larangang Medina, Platun Uno, KLG-AMPIS (Antonio Licawen Front Operational Command) under the Ilocos-Cordillera Committee and in a lie-low status.

Based on the report, the surrenderer voluntarily submitted one M16 A1 cal. 5.56 mm rifle with property of US Markings and “HYDRA-MATIC DIV G.M.-CORP. USA” with defaced serial number, two pieces short magazine, 17 pieces 5.56 mm ammunition, one rifle grenade, and one MK2 fragmentation hand grenade wrapped with packing tape.

Ka Mike was immediately brought to RMFB1 Headquarters at Parian, San Fernando City, La Union for custodial debriefing and processing of his documents for his enrolment to E-CLIP.

“This is a testament that our strong anti-terrorism efforts are really paying off. I encourage our police personnel to continue exerting efforts to support the NTF-ELCAC, so we can encourage more rebels to withdraw their support and allegiance to the NPA and return to the folds of the government,” Peralta said.

During the recent Joint Peace and Security Coordinating Committee Meeting with PNP chief Gen. Guillermo Lorenzo T Eleazar and NOLCOM chief Lieutenant Gen. Arnulfo Marcelo B. Burgos Jr. and the Director of Police Area Command-Northern Luzon Police Lieutenant General Marni C Marcos Jr., it was revealed that since the implementation of Joint Campaign Plan “NATALNA” last December, a total of 26 communist rebels have been neutralized through joint security and law enforcement operations, while 1,729 communist terrorists returned to government fold and yielded a total of 300 firearms.

According to NOLCOM, two to three rebels are surrendering daily in its area.

These are apart from the 1,734 party members of the different NPA-affiliated mass organizations who withdrew their support to the terrorist group, reported Burgos.
