Ninoy’s uncle succumbs to cancer

THE Aksiyon Demokratiko political party yesterday announced the passing of its chairman former Tarlac Rep. Herminio Aquino.

Aquino, uncle of Filipino democracy icon Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. and grand uncle of former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III succumbed to cancer at age 72.

The death of Herminio came weeks after the passing of “Noynoy.”

“It is with deepest sorrow that we inform the public of the passing of Aksyon Demokratiko’s chairman, former Cong. Hermie Aquino,” party secretary-general Ernest Ramel Jr.. in a statement, said.

“He was an inspiring servant leader, a great man and a true patriot. He will be missed in these difficult times in our nation,” Ramel added.

The former lawmaker died due to complications from cancer.

He ran as vice president of former senator Raul Roco in the 2004 national elections but lost to Noli de Castro.

“Hermie” was an honor student at the Ateneo de Manila University, where he took up Bachelor of Arts in Economics.

After the 1986 People Power Revolution he joined the government of former President Corazon Aquino.

Prior to his vice presidential bid, he served as executive secretary and minister of the Ministry of Human Settlements for a year before deciding to run for congressman.

He represented the 3rd district of Tarlac at the House of Representatives from 1987 to 1998 and served as the province’s vice governor from 1998 to 2001.

The former lawmaker is married to Ma. Victoria Guanzon. Their four children are Servillano II, Paolo Antonio, and Ma. Theresa Belinda and Ma. Camille Corazon.
