THE National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is reviewing a closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage that recorded the murder of Atty. Rex Jesus Mario Fernandez by still unidentified assailants in Cebu City.

A CCTV video showed that the lone gunman, who wore a red jacket, immediately boarded a getaway motorcycle driven by another person.

Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra has formally tasked the NBI to conduct a parallel probe into the murder of the lawyer last Thursday afternoon.

In Department Order No. 204, the NBI was given authority to conduct investigation, and if evidence warrants, file the necessary charges against anyone involved.

The NBI was directed to submit a report after 10 days, and periodically thereafter.

Fernandez died on the spot due to multiple gunshot wounds, initial police investigation showed. He was the 64th lawyer killed under the Duterte administration.

Fernandez’s vehicle, a Toyota Camry, was ambushed by the motorcycle-riding suspects in Barangay Guadalupe.

Reports have it that Fernandez was travelling along with his driver, who was wounded, when they were treacherously attacked.

He was the same lawyer who recently went on a hunger strike outside a condominium in Mandaue City when the management reportedly cut off his water supply.
