Illegal firecrackers

WITH just 11 days before the start of the traditional “Simbang Gabi,” the government ought to intensify its campaign against “illegal firecrackers.”

Among Catholics in the Philippines, “Simbang Gabi” or “Misa de Gallo” is a series of “dawn masses” for nine consecutive days before Christmas Day.

In the past, hard-headed people, mostly youngsters, exploded firecrackers while going home from churches, where they attended these midnight masses.

That’s why, there’s that urgent need for the country’s law enforcers and barangay authorities to now intensify the nationwide drive against illegal firecrackers.

“Kung maari nga lang ay walang gagamit ng paputok bago ang New Year revelry sa Dec. 31,” according to a member of the Civilian Volunteer Organization (CVO).

The CVO added: “Kailangang walang maipagbiling bawal na paputok at pailaw sa merkado para masiguro ang kaligtasan ng lahat sa Christmas Season na ito.”

We, thus, commend the police for seizing illegal firecrackers worth P1.5 million from the house of a businessman in Tanauan City, Batangas.

The local police had earlier received several reports tagging the trader as a firecracker supplier not only in Batangas but also in neighboring provinces.

As a well-meaning Filipino, we cannot overemphasize the importance of ensuring the health and safety of the Filipino people during the holidays..

And we should spare no one in our nationwide campaign to rid the Philippines of illegal and deadly firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices.
