THE House of Representatives on Monday adopted a resolution expressing its profound condolences to the bereaved families of those who died during the onslaught of Severe Tropical Storm Paeng.

“The House of Representatives commiserates with and offers its collective effort and initiatives to comfort and help the bereaved families who are left behind so they can move on with their lives and start anew,” House Resolution (HR) No. 505 adopted on Monday said.

The resolution also called on the members of the chamber “to collectively and individually rise up to meet the challenges of relief and rehabilitation of the storm-stricken areas, by consolidating individual pledges for the purpose of providing financial and all other kinds of assistance” to Paeng victims.

“The numerous loss of lives, the extensive damage to government infrastructure and private properties, and the adverse impact caused by Severe Tropical Storm Paeng to the livelihood of the people who are still reeling from the vestiges of the COVID-19 pandemic, call for immediate assistance from the government and the private sector to support the recovery and rehabilitation of the affected areas and people,” the lawmakers stressed.

The House resolution was introduced by Speaker Martin G. Romualdez, House Majority Leader and Zamboanga City Rep. Manuel Jose “Mannix” M. Dalipe, House Minority Leader and 4Ps party-list Rep. Marcelino Libanan, senior Deputy Majority Leader and Ilocos Norte Rep. Ferdinand Alexander “Sandro” A. Marcos, Tingog party-list Reps. Yedda Marie K. Romualdez and Jude A. Acidre.

From October 26 to 29, Severe Tropical Storm Paeng, with international name Nalgae, rammed through several regions in the Philippines, inundating most parts of the country with torrential rains that caused the overflowing of major waterways and its tributaries, and triggered flash floods and landslides.

Based on the data of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council as of November 2, Paeng claimed 121 lives; left 2.4 million people or 741,777 families across 70 provinces in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao homeless, displaced or forced to stay in evacuation centers.
