THE government, through the Department of Health (DOH), has reported the country’s first four fireworks-related injuries (FWRIs) this year.

The victims involved boys aged between six years old and 13 years old. They were hurt by “illegal boga,” five-star firecrackers and piccolo.

Powerful firecrackers and defective pyrotechnic devices kill or maim hundreds of revelers, mostly youngsters, and trigger fires every year.

And every year, the government’s nationwide surveillance or monitoring of FWRIs starts on December 21 and culminates on January 5.

“May mga nasasaktan pa kahit tapos na ang revelry dahil sa mga nagkalat na paputok na ‘di nasindihan noong Bagong Taon,” said a father.

Oversized and defective firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices are the usual causes of FWRIs and deadly fires during the holiday season.

The powerful firecrackers include “Pla-Pla,” “Super Lolo,” and “Sinturon ni Judas.”

Law enforcers, local government officials, parents and traders play vital roles in preventing FWRIs and deadly fires during the holidays.

Particularly during the riotous “New Year” revelry on December 31 and January 1, when revelers explode all kinds of firecrackers.

Let’s stop manufacturing, selling and using deadly firecrackers. This will be good for the nation and the Filiino people.
