Converge, Bay Area prevail

CONVERGE made it two wins in a row following a 106-102 victory over San Miguel BeerPBA Commissioner’s Cup at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

Import Quincy Miller and Aljun Melecio led the way for the FIberXers, who squandered a 17-point lead but played well enoigh to escape with their third win in five matches.

Miller finished with a near tripek double of 24 points, 16 rebounds and nine blocks as he outplayed San Miguel counterpart Devon Scott, who had 16 points and 15 rebounds in his debut.

Melecio came through with a career-high 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting and seven assists.

Also providing offensive support for Converge were Jeron Teng (13 points), Mike Digregorio ( 12 points) and Maverick Ahanmisi 10), CJ Perez topscored for the June Mar Fajardo-less San Miguel Beer with 29 points. six rebounds and five assists.

Mo Tautuaa contributed 23 points and 10 rebounds for the Beermen, who took a 96-95 advantage with 5:30 remaining after trailing by as many as 17 points.

Earlier, Andrew Nicholson led all scorers as Bay Area Dragons whipped Terrafirma, 130-76, for its sixth win against only one loss.

Nicholson finished with 37 points, including 31 in the first half before sitting out thefinal period.

Zheng Qilong added 17 points,Song Jianhua contributed 15 points and Zhu Songwei had 12 points for Bay Area.

The 54-point winning margin by Bay Area is tied for the league’s second biggest winning margin in 36 years, according to PBA cheif statistician Fidel Mangonon.

Nicholson’s 31-point explosion in the first half is also the most by a player since Barangay Ginebra’s Justin Brownlee had 33 against NLEX in the 2019 Governors Cup.

“I think my teammates did a great job of moving the ball, finding me in the right spots,” said Nicholson, whose 19 points in the opening quarter were also the most since San Miguel Beer’s Brandon Brown notched the same in last season’s Governors Cup.

Only Juami Tiongson and import Lesterv Prosper managed double-digit scores for Terrafirma with 21 and 18 points, respectively.
