Baguio City continues winning ways

BAGUIO City added four more gold medals in archery and pulled away in the overall standings with a total haul of 32 golds , 25 silvers and 40 bronzes in the Philippine Sports Commission-Batang Pinoy National Championship at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Field.

Chass Mhaiven Nawew Colas of Baguio City stamped his class to clinch the gold medals in the recurve, 30-meter, 40-meter, 60-meter and Olympic round in male under 15 categories.

The 14-year-old student from Baguio City National High School also had one silver in the under 15 male 50-meters.

“Masaya naman po ako. Hopefully madagdagan pa mamaya kasi may events pa ako (Olympic Round, Mixed team event, and team events) and sana madagdagan pa mamaya,” said Colas, who is hoping to increase his gold haul to seven as he was to compete in three more events —Olympic round, mixed team event, and team vvents– late Friday.

“Actually, ang goal ko po sa competition is to beat myself. Siyempre gusto ko maging better person after nung laro. Actually hindi rin ako nag e-expect basta naglaro ako and in-enjoy ko yun game gulat na lang po ako na nanalo na ako,”added Colas.

Baguio City’s official tally is expected to rise even more after nine kickboxers produced gold-laden performances in the Kick Light and Point Fighting finals early in the morning.

The nine are Janna Mae Tinay Kicklight in the Juniors Female 42.1-46kg, Shekinah Jonan Lab-oyan (Kicklight Juniors Female 501.-55kg), Lorenzo Iseo Jr., Kicklight Juniors Male (47.1-52kg), Jeyhan Bestre Kicklight (Older Cadets Male 37.1-42kg), Gerwin Lete (Kicklight Older Cadets Male 47.1-52kg), Leejohn Masedman (Kicklight Older Cadets Male 52.1-57kg), Klerhol Cabinto (Point Fighting Young Cadets Female 32.1-37kg), Stephanie Lipiano (Point Fighting Young Cadets Female 37.1-42kg) and Clark Fattit( Point Fighting Older Cadets Male 28.1-32).

Pasig City moved to second place with 25 golds, 27 silvers and 40 bronzes behind

the six-gold medal haul of Arabella Taguinota in swimming.

Erstwhile second placer Cebu dropped to third place with 20 golds, 15 silvers, and 21 bronzes.

Davao City, bolstered by four gold medals by Daphne Manuelle Magdangal in archery, climbed to solo fourth with 20 -14-16.

Uyking of Davao captured her four gold medals in qualification round – tecurve Under 13 female 20-meters, 25-meters, 30-meters and qualifying round.

Several events were still being played as of press time on the final day on Friday for Batang Pinoy and the Philippine National Games that were to be concluded with unified closing rites at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

The Local Government Unit that will emerge as overall champion will receive a cash prize of P5 million with the second placer getting P4 million, the third P3 million, the third P2 million, and the fifth 1 million, respectively.
