PRESIDENT Marcos has established an inter-agency committee mandated to promote human rights in this Asian nation.

In the view of many quarters, the creation of the body is ample proof that the government is out to protect the people’s human rights.

Under Administrative Order (AO) No. 22, the “Special Committee on Human Rights Coordination” will be chaired by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin.

Co-chair is Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla, with Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo and Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos as members.

Whenever necessary, the body may invite as members and/or observers other government offices and agencies, according to the administrative order.

As a “super body,” the committee is likewise tasked to strengthen existing mechanisms for the protection and promotion of human rights in the Philippines.

It will also tackle matters involving national mechanisms for implementation, reporting and follow-up and a “human rights -based approach toward drug control.”

It is certainly heartening to know that the Marcos administration, which ends at 12 noon on June 30, 2028, is doing everything to promote and protect human rights.

As law abiding citizens, we cannot overemphasize the importance of establishing the “Special Committee on Human Rights Coordination.”

It’s, without doubt, a move in the right direction as the Marcos government exerts its best efforts to ensure the health, safety and welfare of the Filipino people.
