IN the wake of discussions about changing a provision of the Constitution, Presidential Adviser on Poverty Alleviation (PAPA) Secretary Larry Gadon has floated a suggestion to amend the terms of local government executives (LGEs).

Gadon called on Congress to also consider in its agenda, amending the three-year terms of local execs to six years just like the President’s and Vice President’s.

House Resolution No. 7, which aims to relax stringent economic provisions in the 1987 Constitution in hopes of attracting more foreign direct investments into the country, has been approved by the House of Representatives in the third and final reading with 288-8 voting and two abstentions.

“The terms of LGUs, the mayors must be extended to 6 years just like the President,” said Gadon as he pointed out that the serving years of local leaders must be longer enough to fulfill their campaign promises.

He added that three years is not enough for a local executive to study, plan and implement meaningful programs for the benefit and development of a town, municipality or city.

Gadon said politicking and campaigning for another term drain their time and effort to perform since it is diverted to campaign preparations.
