HANGZHOU – After producing the country’s first medal, taekwondo suffered big losses for the third straight day in the 19th Asian Games here.

Arven Alcantara advanced to the quarters after beating a fancied Thai rival in the Round-of-16 of the men’s -68-kilogram division.

But against Mohammed Mustafa of Jordan, Alcantara suffered a 2-0 beating.

Both Laila Delo and Dave Cea also dropped their matches with the latter losing to Iran’s Mehran Barkhordari in the men’s -80kg division quarters.

Delo, on the other hand, lost to Vietnam’s Thi Khiem in the women’s -67kg class.

Korean Open gold medal winner Kirstie Elaine Alora (women’s +67kg class) and SEAG 4-time champion Samuel Morrission are left to carry the task to win the country’s first gold in the continental showpiece.

King Patrick Perez won the men’s individual bronze on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the national judo squad will go home without a single medal after it bowed to Thailand in the Round of 16 of the mixed team event at the Xiaohan Linpu Gymnasium here.

All four Pinoy judokas, led by Olympian Kiyomi Watanabe, were wiped out by their Thai rivals to wrap up their campaign without a single medal in this tourney supported by the Philippine Sports Commission and Philippine Olympic Committee.

Watanabe bowed to former Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Thonthan Satjadet in the women’s +70-kilogram class while Ryoko Salinas surrendered to Supattra Nanonong in the women’s -70-kg event via ippon in the first 31 minutes of action.

Also surrendering to Thai superiority were John Viron Ferrer in the men’s -90-kg event and Carl Dave Aneseta in the men’s +90-kg event, who lost to Wei Fuyang and Kittipong Hantratin, respectively.

With that, the Filipinos ended ninth while the Thais advanced to the quarterfinals.
