NEWLY-INSTALLED Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, General Dionardo B. Carlos on Saturday designated two members of Philippine Military Academy (PMA) ‘Makatao’ Class of 1989 who were his top rivals to the top PNP position to key posts in the 222,000-strong organization.

The member of PMA ‘Maringal’ Class of 1988 named Major Gen. Rhodel O. Sermonia as the new Acting PNP Chief Directorial Staff, the 4th highest position in the force which he previously held.

Sermonia, the erstwhile PNP Director for Operations was replaced by Brigadier Gen. Valeriano T. de Leon. There is no word yet on who will replace de Leon, a former Police Regional Office 3 director in Central Luzon at the PNP Civil Security Group.

It was the first round of reorganization of key positions ordered by Carlos, the 27th PNP chief, since he was named by President Duterte as the successor of now retired Gen. Guillermo Lorenzo T. Eleazar.

As PNP-TCDS, Sermonia will supervise the 11 PNP Directorial Staff in administering functional operations of all their National Support and Administrative Units and the 17 Police Regional Offices.

De Leon will get his 2nd-star as PNP Director for Operations.

The two members of PMA Class 1989 along with PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group director, Major Gen. Albert Ignatius D. Ferro were known as among the contenders for the post vacated by Eleazar.

However, President Duterte chose Carlos as his 7th PNP chief citing “seniority, track record, service reputation and competence.” Carlos will get his 4th-star by virtue of his position.
