2 Aurora hero cops hailed for saving 2 tourists from drowning

PHILIPPINE National Police (PNP) chief General Dionardo B. Carlos yesterday praised the heroism of two Aurora policemen who put their own lives on the line to save 2 local tourists from drowning in a beach in Baler last Monday.

The top cop said Patrolman Clint Avellaneda and Pat. Ruel Viernes, both members of the Aurora Police Surfer Force immediately came to the rescue of the 2 tourists from Arayat, Pampanga.

The two identified as Mervin Mallari, 26, and his brother Gilbert, 25, were immediately plucked out from the waters by the 2 policemen and taken to a safe ground where they were given first-aid by Staff Sergeant Reabelle Aragoncillo of the Aurora Station Health Unit before being taken to the Premiere General Hospital by a crew from the Aurora Tourist Police and the Baler Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

“Saludo ako sa kabayanihan ng ating mga pulis Aurora at sa kanilang hindi pagdadalawang isip na iligtas ang buhay ng mga naturang turista. Pinapakita lamang nito na sa anumang panganib ay handa ang inyong kapulisan na tumulong at ialay ang aming buhay,” Gen. Carlos said.

Both victims were declared in a safe condition by attending physicians, said a report from the Aurora Police Provincial Office.
