TRAFFIC authorities find it hard to address traffic congestion in urban areas, like Metropolitan Manila (MM), across the Philippines.

No less than President Marcos has admitted that traffic jams are unavoidable in these areas. notably during the so-called “rush hours.”

We share the view of President Marcos that an effective and efficient public transport system is vital in addressing the problem.

And it is reassuring to know that the government, through concerned offices and agencies, is looking for ways to ease commuter woes.

Without doubt, the hard-pressed motorists and commuters, mostly students and workers, want the government “to act now and fast.”

Of course, that’s what President Marcos is doing, knowing full well that traffic congestion remains a major problem in the country.

Aside from hitting hard at tariffic law violators, the government is seen to utilize historic Pasig River to transport passengers and cargoes.

“Kung made-develop ang Pasig River, marami ang sasakay sa mga ferry boat dito dahil mabilis ang biyahe,” an elderly commuter said.

“Hindi ka male-late sa opisina, eskuwela o ibang engagement dahil hindi ka mata-trapik sa Pasig River,” according to a businessman.

There’s really that need for the government to come up with effective measures aimed at ending the commuters’ traffic woes in the country.

We are all for this because there’s an oversupply of hard-headed Filipinos, particularly motor vehicle drivers and even ordinary pedestrians.
