NAVOTAS City Mayor John Rey Tiangco on Friday expressed his support to the appeal of Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretay Benhur Abalos for “courtesy resignation” of all police generals and colonels of the Philippine National Police (PNP) in an effort to “cleanse” its hierarchy involved in illegal drugs.

“We bow to the wisdom of Sec. Abalos in asking all generals and colonels of the Philippine National Police to tender their courtesy resignation amid the ‘ninja cops’ issue. For sure, his pronouncement was borne out of vital intelligence reports and information that he possesses as a long-time chief executive and the current DILG chief,” Mayor Tiangco said in his statement.

“Cleaning house is by no means easy, but it is crucial as we strive to root out the drug problem. This shows how serious and committed Sec. Abalos is in eradicating illegal drugs,” Mayor Tiangco added.

Meanwhile, the Metro Manila Council (MMC) also issued a resolution expressing support for the appeal of Abalos for the courtesy resignation of the high-ranking officials of the PNP as part of its internal cleansing campaign.

Based on the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Resolution No. 23-01, the MMC calls for the filing of courtesy resignations of all PNP senior officials and officers as soon as possible.

“As a manifestation of their professionalism and patriotism, all PNP colonels and generals must immediately tender their courtesy resignation in order to preserve and protect the credibility of the police organization and remove any and all doubts on its public reputation and stature,” cited in a one-page resolution.

MMDA Acting Chairman Atty. Romando Artes said that as public officials, the police must, at all times, be accountable to the people and uphold their sworn duty to serve and protect.

“The Metro Manila mayors are one with DILG Secretary Abalos’ call to restore public trust to the PNP that is one of the agencies leading the country’s war against illegal drugs,” Artes said.
