AS part of the reformation program of persons deprived of liberty for 2024, the Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm (SPPF) in Occidental Mindoro has embarked in hollow block making not only to provide skills and training to PDL’s but also to contribute income to the institution.

In his report to Bureau of Corrections Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr., SPPF Superintendent Robert Veneracion disclosed that this year the SPPF acquired roughly 90,000 pieces of CHB with various sizes, intended for the repairs of existing facilities.

With this year, the CHB Making Project objective is to provide CHB for their own used in building their facilities instead of buying to save money while eyeing also to supply the needs of its neighboring barangays as part of their commercial production plan, Veneracion told Catapang.

He added that they are planning to acquire additional CHB making machine to be able to produce more CHB.

This program focuses on training PDLs in the production of CHB widely used in the construction industry and they are able to contribute in the repair and construction of prison facilities while generating income for the SPPF.

It also helps address the issue of overcrowding in prisons by actively involving PDL in constructive activities. By using their skills to improve the facilities they inhabit, they take ownership of their environment and play a role in the upkeep and maintenance of the prison.

Aside from CHB making, the SPPF supports the PDL Reformation Programs for CY 2024 thru the following activities and programs intended to train and equipped 250 PDL’s for the following fields: masonry, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, auto repair, shielded metal arch welding, livestock production and horticulture.

One of the marching orders of DG Catapang to his superintendents in various OPPFs is to enter into partnership with the private sector and go into business to make the BuCor relevant, sustainable, and respected under the Program “Bagong BuCor sa Bagong Pilipinas.”
