A welcome decision

PENDING the creation of enough quality local jobs, the Philippines must continue fine-tuning its overseas employment program.

The highly-successful program is designed to meet the employment needs of the burgeoning population, which totals 115 million.

Thus, we commend the Kuwaiti government for lifting the ban on the issuance of entry and worker visas to Filipino migrant workers.

The Kuwaiti government imposed the ban a year ago over the rights of employers and migrant workers in the oil-rich Middle East nation.

After the lifting of the ban, a joint technical working group was established to address employment-related issues.

Members of the committee, composed of competent authorities from the two countries, meet periodically, according to reports.

Government records show that Kuwait hosts more than 280,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), many of them household workers.
