Rizal, Tacloban in q’finals

THE quarterfinal cast is complete.

Rizal Towers, Quezon City Simba’s Tribe, Camarines-Iriga Eagles and Tacloban Vikings took different paths to reach the quarterfinal round of the 2022 PCAP-GM Wesley So Cup chess team championships over the weekend.

Rizal toppled Cavite Spartans, 11-10, 11-10, while Quezon City subdued Isabela Knight of Alexander, 11-10, 13-8, in a pair of upsets to advance in the Northern Division.

Both Rizal and Quezon City needed to win twice against their higher-rated opponents.

Over at the Southern Division, Camarines-Iriga eliminated Cagayan de Oro, 13.5-7.5, and Tacloban slammed the door on Palawan Queen’s Gambits, 11-10.

NM Richelieu Salcedo, NM Noel dela Cruz, Marlon Constantino and Kelly Ann David-Salcedo provided the much-needed victories for the Towers of chess patron Eduardo Madrid.

Salcedo outduelled iM Banawa.of Cavite, taking 4.5 points outbof dix in their board one showdown.

Dela Cruz claimed all six points against veteran nM Petronio Roca.

NM Elias Lao Jr. also won over FM Eduardo Tunguia in the senior board in the second match.

The Simba’s Tribe matched the Towers’ success over their twice-to-beat opponents with NMs Edgardo Garma and Marlon Bernardino Jr. and Robert Arellano leading the way.

NM Gerardo Cabellon and Anwar Cabugatan carried the fight for Isabela.

Camarines-Iriga and Tacloban finished off their respective play-in opponents.

In the quarterfinals, Tacloban will face top seed Iloilo Kisela Knights while Camarines will meet No. 2 Negros Kingsmen.

PCAP is headed by President Atty. Paul Elauria and Chairman Michael Angelo Chua.

Tournament sponsors are San Miguel Corporation, Ayala Lands and PCWorx.
