JUSTICE Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla yesterday disclosed the “marching orders” given to the newly-appointed Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) chief Director General Gregorio Catapang Jr.

These orders include cleaning up jails to make them conducive to inmates, ensuring that jails function as correctional facilities rather than punishment, and making jails more humane for persons deprived of liberty (PDLs).

“Our aim is really to make it a better place. We can have a better system of law,” Remulla said.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. appointed Catapang, a former Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief-of-staff, as the new Director General of BuCor.

Catapang’s appointment was signed on March 23, 2023, according to a copy of the appointment letter provided by Justice Assistant Secretary and spokesperson Atty. Mico Clavano.

In a message, Clavano expressed the Department’s full support for Catapang in his endeavor to pursue planned projects and programs for the betterment of BuCor and the welfare of PDLs.
