Price hikes

DESPITE the many problems confronting the country, many quarters still believe that government authorities are capable of meeting the many needs of the burgeoning population.

And the Marcos administration should be commended for giving priority to bringing down the costs of goods, notably basic necessities, and services.

Likewise, the two-chamber Congress is seen to come up with pieces of remedial legislation to make sure that our people, now more than 110 million, have access to low-priced goods.

At the same time, we, like other well-meaning Filipinos, support government plans to field more rolling “Kadiwa” stores in various parts of this poverty-stricken Southeast Asian nation.

During the incumbency of the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos, “Kadiwa” was a household name not only in heavily-populated Metropolitan Manila but throughout the country.

The “Kadiwa” program, an original brainchild of former First Lady Imelda Romualdez Marcos, enables consumers, especially the poorest of the poor, to purchase goods at cheaper prices.

Under the system, the country’s poor farmers are able to sell their products, including vegetables and fruits, without having to worry about the high cost of transportating their crops.

It will be recalled that during the poll campaign period, then presidential candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos Jr. called for the establishment of “Kadiwa” stores in every barangay.

We hope the Filipino people, including the ordinary citizens, will wake up to their moral responsibility to help government authorities in going after hoarders and profiteers.

Ito ay kung gusto nating matigil na ang pagsasamantala ng mga walang pusong negosyante.
