THE National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) will conduct a parallel investigation into the murder of veteran broadcaster Percy Lapid in Las Piñas City last Monday night.

“The NBI is on the case,” Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla said in a message.

This developed as the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) will also conduct a motu propio (on its own) investigation into the incident.

“CHR stands with the media community in denouncing and condemning this violent crime and violation of the right to life. Journalists are essential in upholding democracy and demanding accountability in any society,” the CHR said in a statement.

Also, the CHR urged authorities to act swiftly in bringing to the bar of justice the perpetrators behind his murder.

“One episode of media killing is already far too many. As such, we urge [the] government, particularly our law enforcement officers, to bring the perpetrators to account. We also call on the public to advocate for the importance of journalism in maintaining peace, cultivating unity, and advocating justice for all,” the commission said.

A DWBL radio commentator, Lapid, Percival Mabasa, in real life, was gunned down at the gate of BF Resort Village in Talon Dos while on his way home.

Lapid was aboard a black Toyota Innova when he was attacked.

He was brought to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Lapid hosted a radio commentary show called “Lapid Fire,” criticizing fake news, red-tagging, and government corruption.
