THE Philippines, one of the world’s major exporters of highly-qualified manpower, hopes to produce a new generation of competent, job-ready, active, responsible and patriotic citizens.

This after the government, through the Department of Education (DepEd), has succeeded in coming up with a new basic education curriculum.

The revised school curriculum focuses on the development of foundational skills, such as literacy, numeracy, and socio-emotional skills to Kindergarten and Grade 3 learners.

Called the “MATATAG Curriculum,” it will be implemented in school year 2024-25 for Kindergarten and Grades 1, 4 and 7.

In SY 2025-26, Grades 2, 5 and 8 learners will be under the new curriculum, with Grades 3, 6 and 9 in SY 2026-27. Grade 10 learners will join them in SY 2027-28.

Vice President Sara Z. Duterte, concurrently Secretary of the education department, said the “MATATAG Curriculum” reduced the number of competencies.

Likewise, the new school curriculum includes peace competencies, highlighting the promotion of non-violent actions and development of conflict resolution skills.

It took education stakeholders two years to review the K to 12 basic education program. It started during the incumbency of former DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones.

Through Republic Act No. 10533, the government lengthened the number of years of basic education from 10 years to 12 years, drawing protests from various sectors of society.

The protests prompted the government to order the review of the controversial K to 12 basic education program.
