THE Department of Health (DOH) has reported the declining number of cases of two communicable diseases in the Philippines.

In fact, the cases are seen to plateau next month as concerned government authorities exert their best efforts to the diseases.

As expected, health authorities and the Filipino people welcomed the “good news.”

The two highly-contagious aiments are the influenza-like illness (ILI) and the dreaded and deadly coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Note that the crippling two-year COVID-19 pandemic claimed the lives of millions of people, including Filipinos, throughout the globe.

Not only that. The pandemic, which reportedly originated from China, ravaged the world economy, displacing millions of workers.

Health department records show that there were a total of 16,155 ILI cases across the country from January 1 to February 3.

The figure was 19 percent lower coimpared to the 19,935 ILI cases registered during the same period last year.

The DOH also reported that out of the 1,345 dedicated COVID-19 intensive care unit beds, only 151 (11 percent) were occupied.

We call on the government to come up with more precautionary measures to head off a possible epidemic that would have the potential to kill people.

It’s a move in the right track.
