TOKYO Olympian Caloy Yulo began his redemption by winning a gold and a bronze in the 2021 All Japan Senior and Masters Gymnastics Championships in Yamagata Thursday.

The 21-year-old gymnast from Leveriza, Malate emerged victorious in the floor exercise title after tallying 15.300 points, beating Japan’s Uchida Hayato (14.700) and Takahiro Goshima (14.466) in the process.

He finished third in the vault with a score of 15.000 behind hometown bets Asato Keisuke (15.233) and Tanigawa Wataru (15.200).

Yulo’s Japanese coach Munehiro Kugimiya his triumph in the All Japan competition as a big bounce back following his surprisingly below-par performance in last month’s Olympics.

In his favorite floor exercise where he is a world champion in 2019, Yulo ended up in 44th place and failed to advance in the Tokyo Games, as well as in four other events.

Yulo missed the podium finish in the vault after scoring 14.716 points, just 0.017 behind bronze medalist Artur Davytan of Armenia.

Up next for Yulo is the 2021 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships scheduled next month in Kitakyushu, Japan.
