FORMER Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief of staff Gregorio Catapang Jr. on Friday was officially designated as officer-in-charge (OIC) of the controversy-ridden Bureau of Corrections (BuCor).

In Department Order No. 576 signed by Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla, Catapang will be replacing Director General Gerald Bantag who was slapped with a 90-day preventive suspension following the mysterious death of a ‘middleman’ in the controversial murder of broadcaster Percy Lapid.

Bantag’s preventive suspension was ordered by President Marcos Jr. himself, Remulla said in an early morning press conference on Friday.

BuCor is an attached agency of the Department of Justice (DOJ).-
