Economic saboteurs

VARIOUS quarters acknowledge that economic saboteurs, such as hoarders and profiteers, victimize the suffering Filipino people even during trying times.

No less than a member of the House of Representatives wants to send these heartless saboteurs to jail, accusing them of inflicting great suffering on millions of Filipinos.

Bagong Henerasyon party-list Rep. Bernadette Herrera, in a statement, said the activities of hoarders and profiteers adversely affect the struggling Philippine economy.

We share her view that the Department of Justice (DOJ) ought to order the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and a panel of prosecutors to go after these saboteurs.

Economic saboteurs, she said, manipulate the prices and supply of agricultural products.

The lady solon said government authorities should go beyond raids on warehouses, adding “we need paper trails, electronic trails, protected witnesses and convictions,”

To address the problems of hoarding and profiteering, particularly during trying times, the government must come up with tough administrative penalties and stiffer fines.

It is certainly lamentable to note that despite the many pieces of legislation meant to curb economic sabotage, there are still wild fluctuations in prices and supply of agricultural products.

That’s why some quarters suspect that economic saboteurs operate outside and within government agencies that are supposed to fight hoarders and profiteers.

And government authorities deserve the support of the Filipino people as they go after those who continue to enrich themselves at the expense of our suffering consumers.

Dapat silang mabulok sa loob ng kulungan.
