COPS arrested a man who is allegedly suffering from “depression” for attempting to abduct a 5-year-old boy in front of his school in Quezon City on Thursday.

P/Brig. Gen. Nicolas Torre III, district director of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD), said the incident happened at about 10:30 a.m., September 1, 2022, while the victim was about to enter Goodwill II Elementary School located in Barangay Bagbag, Novaliches, Quezon City.

Torre said the suspect abducted the victim by pretending to be the student’s father.

The student panicked, which caused a commotion. A parent who was waiting for her child alerted bystanders.

The suspect attempted to escape with the child but was caught by policemen and Barangay Public Safety Officers (BPSOs) after a brief chase.

The suspect is now detained at PS (Police Station) 4 custodial facility and will be charged with abduction in relation to RA 7610 or the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation, and Discrimination Act.

Mayor Joy Belmonte assured that QC is a “child-friendly city” that is safe and peaceful to live with. “Patuloy tayong nakikipatulungan sa ating mga kapulisan upang bantayang mabuti ang ating mga eskuwelahan katuwang ng ating mga BPSOs upang masiguro nating ligtas ang bawat mag-aaral sa ating lungsod.”

Meanwhile, Torre III called the attention of the public, especially the parents of minors, to monitor and keep their eyes close to their children. Likewise, he assured the public that his men will conduct police visibility and patrol to prevent this from happening again. “Huwag po kayong matakot sapagkat nandito po ang inyong kapulisan upang bantayan ang inyong seguridad at kaligtasan.”
