Cu to show wares in KL, Singapore
NATIONAL master Ivan Travis Cu resumes his campaign for chess excellence by competing in two major international chess tournaments in the next two weeks.
Cu, one of the country’s brightest young players, will take part in the 47th Selangor Chess Open on May 26-31, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and the Singapore Chess Festival on June 4- 11.
Cu is best remembered for winning the individual bronze medal in the Asian Youth chess championship held last Oct.13-22 in Bali, Indonesia.
Last month, he added another feather to his cap by topping the National Capital Region Palarong Panrehiyon 2023 secondary boys chess tournament held at the Pinaglabanan Elementary School in San Juan last April 24-27.
A student of Xavier School in San Juan, Cu finished undefeated with five wins and two draws in the tough seven-round Swiss system tournament which attracted players from Metro Manila from Grade 7 to Grade 12.
He finished half a point ahead of two other players and earned the right to represent NCR in the upcoming Palarong Pambansa scheduled later this year.
Cu’s father, Teddy, thanked Go For Gold, Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), Cong. Atty. Bel Zamora of San Juan City, Vice Mayor Warren Villa of San Juan City, Cat Chua and several other sponsors for supporting the young Cu’s international campaign.
