CLARK Kean Amodia emerged as the overall champion in the 2023 ERJHS Alumni Sports Club student chess tournament at the ERJHS audio-visual room in Mayon Ave., Quezon City last May 22.

Amodia, the 12-year-old student from Class 7-Magiting, completed a five-game sweep in the Swiss system tournament organized by ERJHS Alumni Sports Club to determine the participants to the “Isulong Mo with GM Eugene Torre and IM Angelo Young” simultaneous chess exhibition matches.

Amodia received a finely-crafted trophy from Rey Bartolo of Batch 81 and souvenir coffee mug.

Reyland Samson of Class 7- Magiting settled for runner-up honor with 4.5 points on four wins and one draw, while Lhu Fearigs Calimbas of Class 10-Amethyst wound up third with four points.

Actually, Calimbas finished in a six-way tie for third place, but clinched third place by virtue of higher tiebreak score

Xenon Santos and Stephanie Nicole Belgira of 8-De la Rama finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Calimbas, Santos, Belgira, Suis Caleb Reyes of Class de la Rama, Dylan Ryuji Sta. Maria of 8-Abueva and Jayvee de la Rosa of 10-Sapphire have four points apiece.

Completing the Top 10 finishers were Ezekiel Paulino of 11-Felicitous and Fritz Repana of 8-De la Rama.

Both Paulino and Repana have 3.5 points, the same score of Rafael Torrechiva.

ERJHS Principal Gina Obierna awarded the trophies and medals to the top finishers, together with GM Torre, IM Young and IM Idel Datu.

Assisting them are ASC adviser Zeny Castor of Batch 70, ASC president Ed Andaya of Batch 81, ASC vice-president Imee Gines of Batch 82, secretary Jane Jimenez of Batch 85, auditor Bess Maghirang of Batch 83 and Ms. ERJHS Alumni Jean Wenceslao of Batch 89.

A total of 56 players participated in the five-round tournament supervised by tournament director Roy Madayag of Batch 91 and ERJHS coach Andy Regala.

The top 20 players earned the right to play Torre and Young in simultaneous exhibition matches.They join alumni standouts Jose de Leon, Tony Susano, Romeo Gagap and Richard Nell.

All participants were also given short chess lecture by IM Datu. AA
