FORMER Quezon City Majority Floor Leader Atty. Ariel Enrile-Inton will be one of the special guests during the “Isulong Mo with GM Eugene Torre and IM Angelo Young” simultaneous exhibition chess matches at the E. Rodriguez Jr. High School in Mayon Ave., Quezon City on May 22.

Inton is best remembered for organizing the historic Torre-GM Rogelio Antonio, Jr. Chess Road Show: The Rematch in Quezon City in 2008.

The six-game Torre-Antonio one-on-one match was held in different historic places in Quezon City, including the Shrine of Pugad Lawin in Barangay Bahay Toro.

The sixth and final match was played at the Gateway Mall in Araneta Center Cubao in July, 2008.

“This is another good way to encourage the youth to get involved in sports. As we always say, make the right move and play chess,” said Inton in his message to ASC president Ed Andaya.

Both Torre and Young will play 15-board simultaneous exhibition matches against select students and alumni of E. Rodriguez Jr. High School.

This will be the second time that Torre will play simultaneous exhibition matches against select ERJHS students.

Torre swept his 15-board simul also organized by the ASC in cooperation with the Meralco Sports Foundation at the Barangay N.S. Amoranto in February, 2018.

Joining Torre is Young, who was honored as one of the outstanding alumni of the school during the first-ever Alumni Sports Hall of Fame and Scout Achievers Awards held last March, 2016.

Before the simul, IM Idel Datu will also conduct a chess lecture for ERJHS students.

Datu served as program head for chess of Ateneo de Manila from 1996 to 2015.

He also previously served as coach of the Philippine women’s team in the World Chess Olympiad in Dresden, Germany.

Datu now plays for the Pasig Pirate sin the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP).

Among those invited to attend the unique chess event are Cong. Arjo Atayde, Councilors Joseph Juico,T.J. Calalay and Doray Delarmente and former ERJHS Alumni Association president Jess Asistin.

Tournament director Roy Madayag of Batch 91 said more than 50 students are expected participate in a five-round Swiss system tournament to determine the top students who will play exhibition matches against Torre and Young.

Select alumni will also be allowed to join the simul matches, which serve as part of the “ERJHS Alumni Sportsfest 2023.”

Supporting the event are Lina Torres of Batch 62, Rey Bartolo of Batch 81, LIzette Mariano of Batch 93, Jubilant Advertising and Camp Pulong Gubat Wavepool Resort-Batangas.
