ADMITTEDLY, the indifference and hard-headednes of some people play “a key role” in the outcome of the government’s campaign to hasten the return to normalcy in the Philippines.

Despite the raging coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, some of our countrymen are reluctant to wear mask and observe social distancing, drawing the ire of well-meaning people.

With the current economic troubles their major concern, including the continued closure of many businesses, many ordinary citizens across the country are certainly worried and sad.

And of course, the difficulty in meeting the vaccine needs of the more than 110 million Filipino people provides a major challenge for concerned government authorities.

Note that more and more people now want to be vaccinated against the dreaded and deadly COVID-19, which has claimed the lives of millions of people across the globe.

When the authorities started inocculating the people, particularly the frontliners and senior citizens, the government noted the indifference and reluctance of the public.

A parent said: “Marami ang natakot dahil sa “dengvaxia controversy.” Hanggang ngayon ay nasa korte pa ang kaso ng mga batang namatay daw pagkatapos na maturokan ng dengvaxia.”

However, after the emergence of more deadly and contagious COVID-19 variants, like the “Delta” strain, “marami ang natakot at gusto na ang magpa-bakuna sa buong bansa.”

Thus, the mushrooming number of Filipinos now wanting to be vaccinated against the disease must be addressed by government authorities if we are to achieve “herd immunity.”

Kung hindi ay baka matagalan pa tayong bumalik sa dati nating pamumuhay.
