ASIDE from holding limited sports, the UAAP may not see full participation from its member-schools in Season 84 which is set to open on March 26.

Although all eight schools will compete in the league’s centerpiece men’s basketball, women’s volleyball and cheerdance events, UAAP Season 84 president Nong Calanog confirmed that at least “one or two schools” will be unable to field in teams in other tournaments.

Men’s beach volleyball, men’s and women’s 3×3 basketball, poomsae, and men’s and women’s chess are also in the Season 84 calendar of events.

“I think one or two schools indicated that based on their preparations, they can only participate in men’s basketball, women’s volleyball and cheerdance. But one or two lang at the most,” said Calanog.

“For those tournaments that used to have all, we’ll probably have six or seven. 3×3, I think all schools will participate. Beach volleyball, I think one or two ang hindi,” he added.

Despite the limited number of events, there is still a general championship at stake in the league’s comeback after a two-year hiatus.

University of Santo Tomas, the most successful sports program in the league with 44 overall titles, will defend the crown.

“Some of our schools, this may be their chance to actually win a general championship,” said Calanog.

Ateneo is currently the titleholders in men’s basketball and women’s volleyball, while National University is the reigning cheerdance champions.

UST seeks to extend its reign in men’s beach volleyball to a third consecutive year, La Salle hopes to make it two in a row in poomsae, while Far Eastern University tries to complete another golden double in chess.

3×3 basketball, on the other hand, will be played after the Season 82 edition was scrapped due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
