Female call center agent jailed for ‘sextortion’

A FEMALE call center agent accused of ‘sextortion’ was arrested by agents of the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime (PNP-ACG) Group in an entrapment operation in Taguig City on Friday, officials said.

The woman was accused of threatening to spread the nude photos of a fellow call center worker on social media if she won’t heed her monetary demands. As a result, the victim sent a total of P53,100 to the accused.

According to PNP-ACG director, Brigadier General Ronnie Francis M. Cariaga, members of the Regional Anti-Cybercrime Unit 4-A arrested the suspect identified only thru her alias ‘Marie’ in a sting in Taguig City Monday afternoon.

The woman’s cellphone was confiscated by the PNP-ACG for forensic examination which will form part of the evidence against her in court.

Brig. Gen. Cariaga again encourage the public to safeguard the privacy of their photos and videos, particularly those with sexually explicit contents. In particular, he said that anybody must refrain from sharing their photos and videos with anyone, especially in group chats to prevent exploitation and extortion.

The suspect is now facing criminal charges for robbery and intimidation of person and concealing identity thru the use of fictitious name under Articles 294 and 178 of the Revised Penal Code and Republic Act 11313 or the Safe Spaces Act, all in relation to RA 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.
