FOLLOWING a teacher’s viral TikTok video showing him doing a certain pose to attract the attention of his “cute” student, the Department of Education (DepEd) said Friday it is conducting a probe for “a potential child abuse action,”

Education Secretary Leonor Briones instructed the regional director of DepEd Central Luzon to investigate the teacher for “insinuating” a possible child abuse action and “mete him with appropriate sanctions.”

The teacher was using the username “leobondoclopez.” He has changed his account to private.

DepEd, as an institution trusted to protect the rights of every Filipino learner, does not tolerate any forms of abuse towards children, the statement said.

“We remind our teachers and non-teaching personnel to always subject our words and actions, including our social media activities, to the highest degree of ethical and professional standards,” it added.

DepEd said as teachers and public servants, they must always champion a safe and nurturing learning environment for children, where physical, verbal, sexual and other forms of abuse and discrimination are renounced.

The statement also said in celebration of the National Children’s Month, DepEd will continue to strengthen its policies and capacity-building activities to further promote its advocacy of protecting learners against abuse.
