Odette

Action not promises

INSTEAD of promising the “moon and the stars,” candidates in next year’s elections would do well to help the victims of super Typhoon Odette in the Visayas and Mindanao.

Certainly, these suffering Filipinos, notably those who lost everything, do not need “tons of promises” but truckloads of food, water, medicine and other basic necessities.

In asking for assistance, Surigao Bishop Antonieto Cabajog said that he had never experienced such destruction, adding blinding rains and howling winds battered their place.

In a text message to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, Bishop Cabajog said that Typhoon Odette terrorized the people  for more than three hours last week.

Some quarters described Odette as one of the deadliest howlers to hit the Philippines, which is visited by an average of 20 to 22 weather disturbances a year, in recent years.

We, thus, urge the government, through concerned offices and agencies, to employ all means to mitigate the sufferings of the typhoon victims, including those in evacuation centers.

This, if  we don’t want to draw the ire of even members of the international community.
